Assoc. Prof. Dr. Heba Alzan | Biomaterials | Research Excellence Award
National Research Center | Egypt
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Heba Alzan is a highly accomplished researcher whose interdisciplinary work bridges biomaterials, immunology, and infectious disease research, with a strong emphasis on translational and applied biomedical solutions. She is an Associate Professor in the Parasitology and Animal Diseases Department at the Veterinary Research Institute, National Research Center, Cairo, and also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Washington State University. Dr. Alzan holds a solid academic foundation in veterinary medicine, parasitology, immunology, and infectious diseases, which has enabled her to develop innovative biomaterial-related strategies for disease control and prevention. Her research focuses on the interface between biological systems and functional biomaterials, including recombinant proteins, peptide-based platforms, nanomaterials, and vaccine delivery systems aimed at controlling vector-borne and parasitic diseases. She is internationally recognized for pioneering work in genetic manipulation of protozoan parasites, development of transmission-blocking vaccines, and validation of novel molecular and structural targets that underpin biomaterial-based immunization strategies. Dr. Alzan has led and contributed to numerous national and international research projects, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across academia, government research institutes, and global health initiatives. Her work demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable and biosafe solutions, including the integration of nanomaterials and bio-derived components for vector control and disease mitigation. In addition to her research achievements, she is actively engaged in graduate supervision, mentorship, editorial service, and peer review for leading international journals. Dr. Alzan’s scientific leadership, innovation at the biomaterials–biology interface, and dedication to impactful research make her a highly deserving recipient of the Research Excellence Award.
